Five-star Sweden leave Tunisia in tatters in Monterrey

There was nothing fortunate about this one. At the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Sweden produced a clinical, controlled demolition to beat Tunisia 5-1 in their World Cup 2026 Group F fixture — a result that flattered neither side's numbers nor the eventual scoreline's symmetry with the contest itself.

What stands out is just how efficient Sweden were. They actually finished the night with slightly less of the ball — 49% possession against Tunisia's 51% — yet the gulf in quality of chance was enormous. Sweden's expected goals (xG, a measure of chance quality) read 1.33 to Tunisia's 0.28, and they fashioned four big chances to Tunisia's none. Seven shots on target told the story of a side that took almost everything on offer, while Tunisia managed just two shots within the penalty area all evening.

Alexander Isak was at the heart of it, scoring once and providing three assists, his understanding with Viktor Gyökeres giving Tunisia's defence no respite. With the win, Sweden finish on four points and, sitting first among the group third-placed teams, have provisionally booked their spot in the Round of 32. For Tunisia, beaten and pointless after three matches with a goal difference of minus ten, the tournament is over.

From Ayari's seventh-minute strike to a six-goal night

Sweden barely needed to settle. Yasin Ayari struck inside seven minutes — a thunderbolt he notably declined to celebrate — to set the tone, and by the half-hour Alexander Isak had doubled the lead, finishing a move begun by Viktor Gyökeres. Tunisia did find a way back just before the break, Omar Rekik pulling one back on 43 minutes from Hannibal Mejbri's pass, and at 2-1 the contest still had a pulse.

That pulse faded fast after the interval. Ramy Khedira was booked on 54, and five minutes later Gyökeres turned provider-turned-scorer, swapping roles with Isak to make it 3-1. The triple change Tunisia rolled out on 72 minutes could not stem the tide. Marcus Svanberg added a fourth on 84, again teed up by the irrepressible Isak, before Ayari completed his brace deep into stoppage time — the sixth and final minute added on — from a Lucas Bergvall delivery. Isak himself had already been withdrawn by then, his evening's work emphatically done.

The right team, the wrong margin entirely

The instinct was sound; the scale was not. The futbol.so community leaned towards a Sweden victory, with the most-favoured scoreline a tidy 2-1 — and that lean was echoed among predictors in Argentina and Colombia, who saw it much the same way. Picking the winner was the easy part.

Where everyone undershot was the margin. Few foresaw a five-goal avalanche, and in that respect it was the official forecast that read the night best: while it too made Sweden the likeliest winner, its projected scoreline landed squarely on 5-1. A reminder that calling the result and calling the carnage are two very different things.
