World Cup 2026: South Africa edge South Korea to reach last 32
Maseko's 63rd minute settles Group A in Monterrey
South Africa beat South Korea 1-0 at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup 2026 for the first time. One goal decided a clear, hot afternoon, and it arrived just past the hour.
The numbers tell the familiar story of a smash-and-grab. South Korea owned the ball — 68% possession to South Africa's 32% — and piled up 111 attacks against 67, with 424 passes into the opposition half. Yet the chances did not match the territory. South Africa registered 1.16 expected goals (xG, the quality of chances created) against South Korea's 0.90, and they were sharper in front of goal, landing four shots on target to three.
There was a curious wrinkle in the assists data. South Korea posted 1.60 expected assists (xA, the likelihood that their passes became goals) to South Africa's 0.75 — the sort of figure that usually points to a goal. It didn't come. Possession without penetration rarely wins matches, and so it proved.

A triple Korean reshuffle, then Maseko strikes
South Korea came out for the second half with intent, making a triple change at the interval: Son Heung-Min, Kim Jin-Gyu and J. Castrop all introduced as Hwang Hee-Chan, Paik Seung-Ho and Lee Tae-Seok made way.
The reshuffle did not have the desired effect. South Africa responded with their own substitution on 62 minutes, T. Moremi replacing O. Appollis — and the change paid off immediately. A minute later Moremi turned provider, teeing up Thapelo Maseko for the only goal of the game.
Chasing an equaliser, South Korea kept rotating, sending on Park Jin-Seob and later Cho Gue-Sung, while South Africa managed the lead with fresh legs of their own, I. Rayners replacing the goalscorer Maseko on 75 minutes and J. Adams coming on late. The bookings reflected the rising tension: A. Modiba was cautioned on 73 minutes, Cho Gue-Sung on 79. South Africa saw it out.

Korea were the pick — Bafana didn't read the script
This one went against the grain. The futbol.so community leaned firmly towards South Korea, with the most-chosen scoreline a 2-0 win for the Koreans. That consensus held across countries too: predictors from Colombia, Argentina and Spain all favoured South Korea, the only quibble being the exact margin.
The official forecast agreed, making South Korea clear favourites to win. Instead, South Africa produced the result almost nobody called and ran out 1-0 winners. A good day for the contrarians.
