Mexico are through to the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a controlled 2-0 win over Ecuador at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. On a cloudy, cool evening in the capital, the co-hosts made the most of a lively opening half-hour and then defended their lead with the sort of discipline that has come to define their nights at this famous ground.

The scoreline flatters neither side and misleads no one. Ecuador enjoyed the ball — 57% possession to Mexico's 43% — and pushed 88 passes into the final third against Mexico's 57, yet all that territory produced just a single shot on target. Mexico, by contrast, were sharper where it counted, registering an expected goals (xG) figure of 1.0 to Ecuador's 0.73 and turning their two big chances into two goals. It was a night of substance over spectacle from the men in green, and an evening that ended with Ecuador down to ten men.

How Mexico and Ecuador lined up in the capital

Quiñones and Jiménez strike, then a late red

Mexico set the tone early. On 22 minutes Julián Quiñones swept home from a Roberto Alvarado assist, and nine minutes later the roles reversed as Quiñones turned provider for Raúl Jiménez to make it 2-0. Both goals arrived inside the opening half-hour, and from there the shape of the contest was set.

Ecuador tried to respond, changing things at the interval with Yaimar Medina and Angelo Preciado introduced, and pressing for a foothold through the second half. But their pressure rarely translated into clear sight of goal, and Mexico managed the game intelligently — rotating Santiago Giménez in for Jiménez and freshening the flanks as the clock ran down. Frustration told for Ecuador in stoppage time: after a scatter of yellow cards, Piero Hincapié was shown a red on 90+5, reducing them to ten as the match drifted to its close.

The community leaned Ecuador — the Azteca said otherwise

This one went against the popular reading. The futbol.so community leaned towards Ecuador, with the most-chosen scoreline a 2-1 win for the Ecuadorians. That tilt was echoed from Colombia, while forecasts from Argentina were split down the middle.

The result vindicated the quieter voices. The official model favoured Mexico — and, tellingly, called the exact 2-0 result — a projection shared by fans in Austria, who also settled on 2-0. England's community leaned Mexico too, if by a narrower 2-1 margin. In the end it was the numbers, rather than the sentiment, that read the night correctly.
