Diop's last gasp and a Monterrey shoot-out

In the World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Morocco and the Netherlands finished level at 1-1 before Morocco prevailed on penalties. It was a result built on patience and one moment of stoppage-time defiance.

The Dutch led through Cody Gakpo with 18 minutes left and looked set to see it out. Then, deep into added time, Ilias Diop equalised and dragged the tie into extra time. Across the night the numbers told their own story. The contest tilted around the hour. Ilias Diop had been booked early in the second half, and as Morocco pressed the Netherlands reshuffled. Teun Koopmeiners came on for Nathan Aké and Wout Weghorst replaced Brian Brobbey just before the Dutch struck.

The goal arrived in the 72nd minute. Crysencio Summerville supplied the pass and Cody Gakpo finished it. His celebration was notably muted. Morocco responded with wave after wave of substitutions, throwing on fresh legs in search of a way through, and the pressure finally told in the first minute of added time. Chemsdine Talbi, on only minutes earlier, set up Diop to level it.

Extra time brought no further goals but plenty of changes, with the Netherlands turning to Marten de Roon and Justin Kluivert late on. That left penalties, where the misses came thick and fast on both sides before Morocco edged through.

Why the Dutch lean didn't pay off

The futbol.so community leaned towards the Netherlands, with a 2-1 Dutch win the most-favoured scoreline. On the night, the football didn't quite cooperate.

The picture varied by country. Predictors in Argentina and England sided with the Dutch, while those in Colombia and Austria fancied Morocco, the latter group calling a 1-1 draw inside 90 minutes correct in spirit. Morocco's dominance of the ball and the chances suggested those backing them read the run of play well. The Netherlands, for all their resilience, mustered an expected goals figure of just 0.23 — a reminder that a one-goal lead is rarely as safe as it looks.
