The United States are through to the World Cup 2026 Round of 16, seeing off Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara. There is plenty here for Pochettino to build on — the resolve to protect a lead down to ten men, and two takers who delivered when it mattered — but also questions, chiefly the Balogun suspension that will hang over the next assignment.

That assignment is a Round of 16 meeting with Belgium on 7 July, a considerable rise in opposition quality. The United States will need to sharpen their edge in front of goal and manage the game more calmly if they are to go a step further.
