World Cup 2026: Argentina's late surge sinks Egypt 3-2
Two down, then three up: Argentina's escape
For an hour or so at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, this World Cup 2026 Round of 16 tie was heading somewhere Argentina did not want to go. Egypt led 2-0, defended with real discipline, and looked entirely comfortable. Then, in the space of eleven minutes, it all came apart.
Argentina won 3-2. Cristian Romero pulled one back on 79 minutes, Lionel Messi equalised on 83, and Enzo Fernández settled it deep into stoppage time. It was a comeback built on relentless pressure rather than composure — Argentina had earlier missed a penalty and seen chances slip by before the numbers finally told.
And the numbers were emphatic. Argentina finished with 2.8 expected goals (xG, a measure of chance quality) against Egypt's 0.98, held 64% of the ball, and created six big chances to Egypt's two. On another day the margin is wider. On this one, it was two goals to spare only after a very anxious wait.

15 minutes to 67, then the roof caved in
Egypt struck first and struck early. Yehia Ibrahim finished off a Mostafa Attia move on 15 minutes, and the plan was working. Six minutes later Argentina had the chance to respond from the penalty spot, but Messi's effort was missed — a moment that hung over the next hour.
The second half brought a scare and then a blow. Egypt had a Mohamed Ziko goal ruled out by the video assistant referee (VAR) on 58 minutes, and just after Argentina's double change on 66, Ziko did find the net for real on 67, teed up by Hassan. Two goals down, an hour gone.
The collapse, when it came, was swift. Romero headed in from a Messi delivery on 79, Messi himself finished a Gonzalo Montiel cross on 83, and Fernández completed the turnaround in the 92nd minute with Lautaro Martínez — on as a substitute — providing the assist. Egypt's frustration spilled into four yellow cards in stoppage time as the game slipped away.

The community read it right; the score, less so
The futbol.so community leaned firmly towards Argentina, and the consensus was clear across the board — supporters from Argentina, Colombia and Austria all pointed the same way. On the winner, they were right.
The most-picked scoreline was a tidy Argentina 2-0. Reality was messier. The official model gave Argentina a comfortable edge to win and, as it happens, called the exact 3-2 result. Few would have drafted the plot that got there: a missed penalty, a disallowed goal, a two-goal deficit, and three Argentine goals in a frantic finish. The right side won; almost nobody saw the manner of it.

- Austria
Official forecast: 3-2

No geo restrictionArgentina march on to the quarter-finals, where they face the winner of Switzerland against Colombia on 12 July. That tie is not yet settled, so the opponent remains open for now.
Egypt will leave with something too — an hour of control against one of the tournament favourites, and the knowledge that they were eleven minutes from a famous night. Argentina, for their part, may want to close games out rather earlier next time.
