World Cup 2026: Bellingham double sinks Norway in extra time

Bellingham twice, and England edge through

England reached the World Cup 2026 semi-finals the hard way, coming from behind to beat Norway 2-1 after extra time at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Jude Bellingham scored both goals — an equaliser deep in first-half stoppage time and the winner three minutes into extra time.

Antonio Schjelderup had put Norway ahead on 36 minutes, finishing a Martin Odegaard assist. It was the sort of lead England have made a habit of chasing down, and so it proved.

The numbers backed the result without flattering it. England edged expected goals (xG, a measure of chance quality) 0.96 to 0.77, created three big chances to Norway's one, and hit the target eight times against Norway's four. Possession was near even at 52% to 48%, but England were the more purposeful, completing 414 passes in the opposition half to Norway's 301.

The win sends England into the last four. The tie was not without controversy — several outlets questioned whether Bellingham's equaliser should have stood — but the scoreline is what goes in the book. Norway can point to a disallowed goal of their own and wonder what might have been.

From Schjelderup's opener to Bellingham's 93rd

Norway struck first. On 36 minutes Schjelderup converted Odegaard's pass to give them a deserved lead, and they carried it towards the interval. Then, in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, Bellingham levelled from an Anthony Gordon assist — the equaliser that would later draw complaints from the Norway camp.

England reshaped at the restart, sending on Bukayo Saka for Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze for Declan Rice, the latter change forced by injury. On 55 minutes Norway thought they had regained the lead through Torbjorn Heggem, only for VAR to intervene and rule it out. It was a pivotal swing.

Norway freshened things around the hour, with Fredrik Aursnes, Oscar Bobb and Antonio Nusa all introduced, but the openings dried up. England kept probing, Reece James arriving for Gordon on 71 minutes.

The tie went to extra time, and Bellingham settled it on 93 minutes, striking again to make it 2-1. Erling Haaland was withdrawn for Jorgen Larsen on 106 minutes, a substitution that raised eyebrows, and Bellingham himself made way for Dan Burn on 111. Kristoffer Ajer's booking on 117 was the only card of a fraught night.

The official model agreed too, making England clear favourites and pointing to the same scoreline. When the crowd, the regional splits and the model all converge, and the match obliges, there is little to argue about — save perhaps the manner of the England goals.
