Switzerland Book World Cup 2026 Last-16 Spot With 2-0 Win Over Algeria

Switzerland are through to the World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a controlled 2-0 win over Algeria on a rainy evening at BC Place in Vancouver. Two goals in efficient spots — one early, one right after the restart — did the job in this Round of 32 tie.

Here's the fun part about the numbers: Algeria actually had the ball more, finishing with 56% possession to Switzerland's 44%, and they out-passed the Swiss 561 total passes to 436. But possession didn't translate into danger. Switzerland posted 2.52 expected goals (xG, a measure of shot quality) against Algeria's 0.74, and they were sharper where it counted — five shots on target to Algeria's two, and nine shots inside the penalty area versus five. A 10th-minute opener, then a punch on the restart

Switzerland didn't waste any time. In the 10th minute, Breel Embolo finished off a move set up by Johan Manzambi to make it 1-0, and that early goal shaped the whole night. Algeria settled into possession but couldn't find a clean route through, and their frustration showed a little in the 36th minute when Fares Chaibi picked up a yellow card.

The decisive moment came right out of the tunnel. Barely into the second half, in the 46th minute, Dan Ndoye doubled the lead to make it 2-0 — the kind of goal that takes the sting out of any comeback plan. Algeria's coaching staff responded with a double change around the hour mark, and a busy round of substitutions followed for both teams in the 71st minute, with Anis Hadj Moussa coming on for Riyad Mahrez among Algeria's switches. Hicham Boudaoui, on as a substitute, was booked in the 72nd minute. From there Switzerland managed the game out, rotating fresh legs late — Zeki Amdouni came on for Embolo, and Silvan Widmer and Michel Aebischer entered in the closing stages — to close out the clean sheet.

The crowd called 2-0 — and got it exactly right

This one was a win for the forecasters. The futbol.so community leaned toward Switzerland by consensus, and the most-picked scoreline was Switzerland 2 - Algeria 0 — the exact final result. You don't get a cleaner call than nailing both the winner and the margin.

Around the map, most fanbases agreed on the direction if not the details. Colombia's and Argentina's communities both favoured Switzerland, though they saw it as a tighter 1-0 affair, while Austria's side matched the 2-0 read spot on. The lone outlier was Spain, whose community leaned toward Algeria and even fancied a 2-1 upset — that's the prediction the scoreboard didn't cooperate with.
