World Cup 2026: Messi Hat-Trick Sinks Algeria 3-0 in Kansas City
Messi Does It All as Argentina Cruise Past Algeria
If you only checked the World Cup 2026 scoreline, you'd think Argentina ran riot. They did win comfortably — 3-0 over Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on a partly cloudy day — but the night belonged almost entirely to one man. Lionel Messi scored all three goals, the kind of single-handed performance that doesn't come around often.
Here's the twist the numbers tell: this wasn't a one-sided thrashing on the stat sheet. Algeria actually had more of the ball, finishing with 52% possession to Argentina's 48%, more attacks (120 to 91) and more passes into the final third (118 to 56). What they didn't have was a single shot on target. That's the whole story in one line — Algeria registered zero shots on goal, while Argentina put six of their attempts on frame and converted three.
The expected goals (xG = expected goals, a measure of chance quality) gap backs that up: Argentina finished at 1.26 to Algeria's 0.32. Argentina was sharper where it counted, and Messi was ruthless. This Group J result also carried real weight in the standings, which we'll get to.

From an 8th-Minute VAR Scare to a 76th-Minute Treble
It nearly started badly for Argentina. In the 8th minute, Farès Chaibi thought he'd put Algeria ahead, but the video assistant referee (VAR) ruled it out for offside. That was as good as it got for Algeria's attack.
Nine minutes later, Messi opened the scoring, finishing off a Rodrigo de Paul assist to make it 1-0 in the 17th minute. Argentina took that lead into the break and made a change at halftime, with Nahuel Molina coming on for Gonzalo Montiel. More tweaks followed just before the hour, as Lautaro Martínez and Nicolás González entered the picture.
Messi struck again in the 60th minute to double the lead, and Algeria responded with a triple substitution that brought on Houssem Aouar, Mohamed Amoura and Riyad Mahrez. None of it stopped the inevitable. In the 76th minute, Messi completed his hat-trick, this time set up by Nicolás González. With the job done, he was withdrawn in the 80th minute for Nico Paz to a deserved ovation. No cards were shown to either side all night.

The futbol.so Crowd Got the Winner — and Nearly the Score
This one was about as close to a clean sweep as community sentiment gets. The futbol.so community leaned firmly toward Argentina, with a clear consensus behind the holders. The most-picked scoreline was Argentina 2-0 — so the result, an Argentina win to nil, was exactly the shape fans expected. Messi's third goal was the only thing that pushed it beyond what most had penciled in.
That tilt held across borders too. Both Argentina's and Colombia's fans on the platform leaned the same way, backing Argentina to win. The official model agreed and went a step further: it gave Argentina the clear edge and called the exact 3-0 final, the most accurate read of the night.

No geo restrictionWith the win, Argentina sit top of Group J on six points from two games, a plus-five goal difference, and they've already booked their place in the Round of 32. Algeria, meanwhile, drop to third on three points; as it stands they're outside the eight best third-placed teams who advance, so their fate now depends on results elsewhere — they're neither through nor out just yet.
Next up, both sides turn to their final group games, where Algeria will be hunting the result they need to climb back into the qualifying picture.
