In a World Cup 2026 Group B fixture at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Switzerland did almost everything but win. Jassem Gaber followed Abunada into the book on 23, and just before the interval Denis Zakaria picked up Switzerland's only caution.

The hour mark brought a triple change from Qatar — Ahmed Fathi, Karim Boudiaf and Ahmed Alaaeldin were all introduced — as they sought a way back into the game. Switzerland responded with their own reshuffle five minutes later, Joel Manzambi and Fabian Rieder coming on. The substitutions kept coming on both sides through the closing half-hour, including Hassan Al Haydos arriving for the finale.

The defining moment waited until the very end. Four minutes into stoppage time, Hashim Al Amin delivered and Bassam Khoukhi rose to head home, levelling matters at 1-1 with effectively the last act of the match.
