Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia played out a 0-0 draw at the NRG Stadium in Houston, and for one of them that single point meant everything. Saudi Arabia made a half-time change and went again on the hour, while Cape Verde freshened up around the same time, sending on N. Da Costa and H. Varela just past the hour mark. The substitutions kept coming as both managers chased a winner that never looked likely to break the deadlock, N. Al Dawsari picking up a yellow on 67 minutes amid the shuffling.

Cape Verde's two shots on target forced three saves from the Saudi goalkeeper; Saudi Arabia's three on target drew two stops the other way. As the clock ran down Saudi Arabia grew ragged, F. Al Buraikan booked deep into stoppage time, and Cape Verde simply saw it out. Wilson Pina, an early bookings risk, was withdrawn in the final seconds. The whistle confirmed the scoreless draw and the result Cape Verde came for.
