World Cup 2026: Australia and Egypt settle it on penalties in Arlington
1-1, an own goal and a shootout in Texas heat
This World Cup 2026 Round of 32 tie between Australia and Egypt finished level at 1-1 after 120 minutes at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, and was decided from the penalty spot. It was a warm, clear day in Texas — comfortably into the thirties — and neither side let the conditions dictate the tempo.
Egypt shaded the underlying numbers. They held 58% of the ball to Australia's 42%, out-passed their opponents 723 to 507, and finished with 1.36 expected goals (a measure of chance quality) against 0.87. Egypt also created all three of the match's big chances and landed four shots on target to Australia's one. Australia, for their part, kept swinging crosses in — 24 of them — and grafted their way back into a game that, on the balance of play, was drifting away from them.
The scoreline told a tidier story than the shootout that followed. After the missed and converted penalties, only one side could go through.

Ashour's header, Hany's own goal, then the spot-kicks
Egypt struck first and struck early. On 13 minutes E. Ashour headed them in front, with K. Hafez supplying the assist, and for a long spell that early lead looked like it might be enough.
Australia responded after the interval. Trewin came on for J. Bos at the break, and on 55 minutes the equaliser arrived from an unlikely source — M. Hany turning the ball into his own net to make it 1-1. Both benches then emptied through the second half, Egypt refreshing their attack with Hassan and Abdelmaguid, Australia introducing Hrustic and Toure as they chased a winner.
Extra time brought the yellows — Hassan booked on 105, Y. Ibrahim on 120 — and a lot of tired legs. Then the drama proper. Deep into the second period of extra time the penalties began even before the shootout, and the sequence from the spot was jagged: Souttar and Herrington missed for Australia, while Egypt's takers — including M. Salah, R. Rabia, M. Saber and H. Abdelmaguid — kept their nerve. Australia's Irvine and Mabil converted their share, but the margins from twelve yards proved decisive.

Egypt's fans read this one right
The futbol.so community leaned towards Egypt, and the most-picked scoreline was a narrow Australia 0 - Egypt 1. That was close to the mark in spirit — Egypt did carry the greater threat — even if the goals didn't quite land where the crowd expected.
There were regional nuances. Colombia's fans favoured a draw and, notably, went for exactly Australia 1 - Egypt 1, the very scoreline that stood after 120 minutes. Argentina's supporters sided with Egypt, while in Austria the lean was towards an Egyptian win by two. The official forecast pointed the same way, making Egypt the likeliest winners on a three-way model, with the draw and an Australia win trailing behind. In the end the ball ran to a shootout — the one outcome no prediction can tidy up.
