Australia 2-0 Turkey: Socceroos Pull Off a World Cup 2026 Upset
Socceroos soak up the pressure and strike twice
Australia opened their World Cup 2026 campaign with one of the surprises of Group D, beating Turkey 2-0 at BC Place in Vancouver on a clear, mild day. This was a textbook smash-and-grab: Turkey dominated the ball but Australia made the moments that counted.
The numbers tell the story of two very different game plans. Turkey controlled 72% of possession to Australia's 28%, racked up 143 attacks to 41, and completed a staggering 635 passes to Australia's 201. They even edged the expected goals (xG = expected goals) battle, 1.36 to 1.18, and out-shot Australia with eight shots on target to four. But Australia's goalkeeper made eight saves to Turkey's two, and the Socceroos turned their limited chances into points.
Nestory Irankunda lit the fuse just before the half-hour, and Calem Metcalfe finished the job in the second half. Discipline mattered too: Australia took no cautions, while Turkey's only blemish was a late yellow card. For Turkey, it was a frustrating afternoon of plenty of the ball and not enough end product.

From Irankunda's strike to Metcalfe's clincher
The game's first decisive moment arrived in the 27th minute, when Nestory Irankunda struck after being teed up by Pat Okon-Engstler, the goal that has dominated the post-match headlines. Australia took that lead into the break despite seeing far less of the ball.
Turkey reshuffled at half-time, sending on Kenan Yildiz for Burak Yilmaz, and pushed for an equaliser. Australia answered by managing the game and rotating fresh legs, with Nishan Velupillay replacing Irankunda just after the hour.
The decisive blow came in the 75th minute. Moments after a double change brought on Tomas Yengi and Joe Geria, Calem Metcalfe doubled the lead to make it 2-0. Turkey kept tinkering, throwing on attacking options late, but the closest thing to a flashpoint was Yusuf Akgun's yellow card in the 86th minute. Australia saw out the win comfortably.

An upset the bracket didn't see coming
There's no community prediction data on file for this one over at futbol.so, so we'll keep it honest: we can't tell you which way the room leaned. What we can say is that plenty of the pre-match coverage framed Turkey as the side setting the pace in Group D, which made Australia's clean, clinical win land as a genuine upset.
The official scoreline projection had it as Australia 2-0 Turkey — exactly how it played out. Whatever the expectations going in, the result reads as a statement from the Socceroos.
